Christmas Album Takes On New Meaning From Ximena Borges
We here at IX Daily get a lot of music sent to us. With that being said, sometimes something jumps up and grabs you thanks to being so vastly different from everything else you've ever heard. Around this time of year, hundreds of Christmas albums come out, many of which feature the same few dozen songs in some manner shape or form.
Ximena Borges, who describes herself in her bio as "One Voice. One Body. No Instruments," makes good on that promise as she expertly layers her own voice to put together Joyful Noise, easily the most innovative Christmas album of the year. Featuring Christmas standards as "Amazing Grace," "Niño Lindo" and "Christmastime Is Here," Borges also uses some atypical arrangements on other Christmas songs to make them wholly her own.
The opening track, "Crunchy Drummer Boy," is a phenomenally arranged piece of music, which sets the tone perfectly for the rest of the album as it provides a taste of Borges' full-range of skills. The best track on the album is the closing rendition of "Amazing Grace." On this song, Borges really displays her remarkable vocal range and the work by Grammy nominated musician Gonzalo Grau to assist with the arrangements truly puts this rendition of the oft-covered song at the forefront of this album.
Overall, this album sounds like nothing you have ever heard before and is more than worth a listen over Kool & The Gang or Leona Lewis' Christmas albums this holiday season.
