David O'Doherty was Surprisingly Fun at JFL
If you’re not getting a chance to go to the Brit-ish Show at Just For Laughs at this year’s festival then you might want to check out Irish funnyman David O’Doherty, performing at both Theatre Ste. Catherine and Underworld as part of Off JFL at Zoofest. The quirky comedian blurs his stand-up routine with comedic songs about life.
Although I’m not personally a fan of musical comedy, preferring to hear a well rehearsed monologue to a well thought through musical medley, I have to admit that O’Doherty was good.
His songs, which felt more like his routine said to cute jingles than actual songs, were clever and full of wordplay and one liners. His spoken routine was insightful, came full circle, and made me think that while life, as he puts it, is “meh, not bad,” his show was, “hunh, really good.” It was an introspective routine which looked at the beauty, fun, and frustrations of life and getting older with all the self-deprecation audiences have come to love from O’Doherty.
A must see for anyone going to the festival year, be sure not to miss David O’Doherty’s performance that runs until this Thursday, July 24th.
