Atmosphere, Soundscapes And Melodies: Fjord's Debut Album Deserves Your Attention

Fjord are ones to watch out for.

Their debut album, Textures was released independently and is currently available on all digital platforms. The 6-track project includes a collection of beautifully moody tunes as well as their highly acclaimed Neil Young cover of "Hey Hey My My (Into The Black)" - If you're into slowing things down a bit, and reflecting through the music, this duo is for you. The electronic-infused production alongside the infectious vocals of each track follows through as a cohesive body of work, which sets them apart from any other artists coming out of the woodworks in Canada.

FJORD will be performing at this year's M for Montreal festival, specifically on November 18th at Newspeak alongside KROY and Ghostly Kisses, and it's free.

We did a little Q&A with the duo hoping to get some more insight on their official debut as FJORD. Scroll through the whole thing after the jump.

How would you describe Fjord in under 140 characters?

Fjord is the result of our long term friendship, music bringing us together as kids. A musical and visual project about atmospheres, soundscapes and melodies.

When did you start making music vs. when you started gaining traction online?

Basically, we’ve been doing music together for 10 years before Fjord took it’s actual shape. We only begun creating as a duo about three years ago. From that moment, it did take an entire year of work and an EP release that went under the radar before we really started to gain some traction, with the release of the first single of the EP, « Blue ».

How long did it take you to put together your debut album Textures?

As newcomers to the music industry, we originally focused on the release of singles, which, in the end, extended over a total period of two years. The songs unfolded during two intensive creative cycles, each of those two years’ autumn. Despite that process, it was obvious to us that we wanted to hold a complete work in our hands, that’s when we decided to incorporate everything into an album, « Textures ».

You just recently released the music video for the track “I Get It Now” - How involved were you in the making of the video?

We firmly believe that collaborative work leads to the best results. Therefore, we asked Nicolas Brassard Asselin, long time friend and cofounder of the production facility « La Raffinerie », if he wanted to work and ultimately direct « I Get it Now ». We met altogether and discussed how the video would reflect the meaning of the song and how we could express these ideas through images and concepts. Then, we trusted their team to make it come to life.

You recently posted on your facebook about how important digital streaming services are nowadays for emerging and established artists. Is this something you learned yourselves through experience?

Even though we have always read about and monitored the state of the music industry, the implications of the shift to streamed media really is something that we learned THROUGH our own experience. Streaming platforms such as Spotify can really help emerging artists trying to break through, as is the case for us. Financially and strategically speaking.

This was especially true during our time as totally DIY artists. In our case, the royalties from the streams acted as an important leverage to help us reach the next steps.

What can we expect from Fjord in the near future?

As mentionned on the previous question, fall has always been a good time for us to create new music ! We’re currently working on songs, exploring sonic avenues and processes, all the while collaborating with Anthony Verge, our graphic designer, on new visuals. We expect new releases sometimes during the winter. In the meantime, we’ll play a couple of shows in Canada and soon, in the united states as well.
